After your sleep study

After your sleep study

Now that your sleep study is done

1. Make a follow-up appointment with the doctor who ordered your sleep study.

  • Schedule an appointment for 3 weeks after your sleep study.
  • The doctor will discuss the results and any needed treatment.

2. How to get your CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) equipment if recommended.

  • The doctor who ordered your sleep study will:
    1. Write a prescription for a CPAP mask and machine.
    2. Send it to Kaiser Permanente’s Durable Medical Equipment (DME) department.
  • The DME department or Apria Healthcare will contact you.
  • Pick up your CPAP at Apria and learn how to use it.

3. Using your CPAP equipment.

  • Start using your CPAP mask right away.
  • Use it nightly for at least 30 days.
  • If you have difficulty tolerating the mask, notify Apria within 30 days of picking up the mask. Apria will replace your mask at no charge.
  • If you are unable to tolerate the CPAP pressure:
    1. Try using it for a few hours at a time.
    2. Gradually increase usage until you are able to use it throughout the night.
    3. After trying it for 2-1/2 to 3 weeks, notify Apria and your doctor. A pressure adjustment may be needed.
  • Follow the instructions in your handout, “Getting Adjusted to CPAP.”
  • See your doctor 30 to 90 days after starting CPAP to follow up on your care.

NOTE: The Sleep Lab is a testing facility. Contact your doctor if you have questions about your diagnosis or treatment.
